FESTUS, Mo. -- Virgie Matthews, 81, of Festus died Monday, Sept. 24, 2018, at Mercy Hospital St. Louis. She was born Oct. 19, 1936, in Advance, Missouri, to Lloyd and Maude Hitt Brown. She and Boyd Matthews were married July 26, 1974, at St. Louis. She worked at a National Supermarket for 20 years and retired in 1985. She was proud of her time affiliated with Local 655...

FESTUS, Mo. -- Virgie Matthews, 81, of Festus died Monday, Sept. 24, 2018, at Mercy Hospital St. Louis.

She was born Oct. 19, 1936, in Advance, Missouri, to Lloyd and Maude Hitt Brown. She and Boyd Matthews were married July 26, 1974, at St. Louis.

She worked at a National Supermarket for 20 years and retired in 1985. She was proud of her time affiliated with Local 655.

She was a tremendous cook, and her skills were enjoyed by all. She was an avid gardener and loved flowers.

Survivors include her husband, Boyd Matthews of Festus; a son, Arvil Matthews of Imperial, Missouri; five daughters, Julie Christiansen of Marthasville, Missouri, Jean Wood of Cahokia, Illinois, Nancy Davis of Florissant, Missouri, Donna Scheu of Arizona and Misty Melton of Cedar Hill, Missouri; a sister, Bonnie Stroup of Arab, Missouri; a brother, Robert Brown of Miner, Missouri; five grandchildren; eight stepgrandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and 14 great-stepgrandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a son.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at Ford and Sons Mount Auburn Funeral Home in Cape Girardeau.

Funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Donny Ford officiating. Burial will be at Morgan Memorial Park Cemetery in Advance.

Memorial contributions may be given to the Stoddard County Children's Home.
