This May 1944 photograph shows two men rowing a boat on flooded Main Street in Cape Girardeau. That year saw the river crest on May 3 at 40.8 feet. It was the second flood that inundated the local business district and the fertile McClure, Illinois, basin in a year’s time. On May 27, 1943, the river peaked at 42.3.
