David Lee Wallis, Jr. of Cape Girardeau departed this life Friday, Feb. 14, 2020.

David was born Sept. 9, 1983 in Cape Girardeau to David and Susan Wallis. David married and united with the love of his life, Katie Ann Niles on July 25, 2015. They have two daughters, Linley Grey Wallis and Kaila JoAnn Wallis.

He graduated from Central High School in 2002. He attended Southeast Missouri State University.

David enlisted into the service right out of high school and served his country from 2005 through 2011. David was a member of the 220th Engineer Co. based in Festus, Missouri. David served from January 2005 to May 2006 in Iraq, during Operation Iraqi Freedom. David earned multiple commendation medals and awards, including the Army Commendation medal: "Specialist Wallis' tour of duty with the 220th Engineer Company and the 48th Brigade during Operation Iraqi Freedom has left a lasting impact on all who were given the opportunity to know and work with him. Specialist Wallis' achievements reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army."

David worked for United Parcel Service from 2007 through 2020. He began his employment as a seasonal worker. He was quickly promoted into management in 2008, and in 2010 he was promoted to his current position in the company as an on-car supervisor.

David was an avid outdoorsman. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping and boating. He could frequently be found out on the mighty Mississippi on a sunset boat cruise. David was always in pursuit of the perfect barbeque and could play a fierce game of bean bags, volleyball and basketball.

David, affectionately referred to as "Unkie Davie," loved his three nieces, Gracyn and Stella Morris and Everleigh Niles, and his two nephews, Samuel and Levi Morris.

David is survived by his wife and daughters; mother and father; sister Kristy (Daniel) Morris; brothers-in-law, David (Neleigh) Niles and Daniel (Tara) Niles; mother-in-law, Nancy Niles; and father-in-law, Bradford (Julie) Niles.

David was preceded in death by his grandparents, Eugene and Patsy Schlick, Clyde and Juanita Wallis; aunt, Barbara Schlick, who was also his godmother; aunt, Mary Jo Schlick; uncle, Dale Wallis; aunt, Lynda Hansen; and cousin Brandi Hansen.

David will be remembered for his generous spirit, dedication to his country and the ultimate love for his family. His legacy will live on through the lives of those whom he loved and who loved him.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Ford and Sons Mount Auburn Funeral Home in Cape Girardeau.

Funeral will follow at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Brett Cheek officiating, with full military honors.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to a scholarship fund for his daughters, Linley Grey and Kaila JoAnn Wallis, at Wood and Huston Bank.
