TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. -- Sally Lou Howard, 91, of Traverse City, formerly of Flint and Burton, Michigan, died Sunday, March 7, 2020.

She was born in Flint, May 20, 1928, the only child to parents Frank Kenneth and Winter Green Howard.

When Sally was nearly 8 months old, her mother died unexpectedly, which in turn led to her being raised by her paternal grandparents, Frank M. and Anna Stone Howard.

Sally's roots ran deep through Flint, a source of pride that would follow her through life. Sally earned a master's degree in music from Millikin University in Decatur, Illinois. From 1955-1958 Sally worked for the U.S. Air Force in Japan, teaching English to Japanese students. After her return, she began a career at Flint Public Schools in the vocal music education department. Her time in the school district spanned over 20 years before she retired. She lived in Burton until 2008, and then moved to Traverse City.

Sally enjoyed traveling the world with her niece and nephews, Brian, Matthew and Rachel. She was a kind and gentle soul who loved music and children, especially by introducing children to music. During her time in Traverse City, she thoroughly enjoyed volunteering as a senior companion through Catholic Human Services and in turn became a recipient of their wonderful services. Sally loved to have lunch at the local hospital followed by playing its baby grand for whomever passed by.
