Roy Garnier “Gary” Squires, 87, of Cape Girardeau died at 7:18 a.m. Tuesday, March 24, 2020, at Chateau Girardeau Assisted Living.

He was born Sept. 13, 1932, in St. Louis to Roy and Rose Garnier Squires. He and Mary Ann Travers were married Aug. 19, 1954, at Mound City, Illinois. She preceded him in death March 29, 2003.

Gary was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, where he served as a military policeman during the Korean War.

He was owner and operator of Gary’s Shell Service in Cairo, Illinois, more than 25 years. Later in life, he became an avid golfer and was a golf pro for Dalhousie, Cape Girardeau Country Club and Arena Golf. He also coached several golf teams in the area, including Southeast Missouri State University’s team.

He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Mound City.

Survivors include his daughters, Julie (Larry Hicks) Klein of Grantsburg, Illinois, Karen (Gary II) Goins of Pulaski, Illinois and Amy (Don Wren) Keistler of Villa Ridge, Illinois; grandchildren, Kelly (Randy Moallankamp) Hill of Grand Chain, Illinois, Jared (Jessica) Klein of Dongola, Illinois, Bryan (Jackalyn) Cravens of Pulaski, Sara (Dustin) Simmons of Jackson, Kaela (Jason) Wilcutt of Liberty, Mississippi, Charles (Cassidy) Holman of Jackson, John (Sasha) Keistler IV of Villa Ridge, Jacob Klein of Cape Girardeau and Gary (Becky) Goins III of Fort Lauderdale, Florida; and 12 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Mary Ann Squires; daughter, Mary Jane “M.J.” Holman; and grandson, Jason “Country” Klein.

Gary — dear father and grandfather — deserves a beautiful tribute. However, due to current gathering restrictions, the visitation will be for family only today at Ford and Sons Mount Auburn Funeral Home in Cape Girardeau. A private graveside service, with military honors provided by Mounds, Illinois, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8891, will be today at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Mounds, with the Rev. Roy “Buddy” Walls officiating.
