SIKESTON, Mo. -- Eva "Lois" Matthews, 92, a resident of Sikeston, died Tuesday, April 14, 2020, at the Lutheran Home in Cape Girardeau.

Lois was born July 2, 1927, in Kuttawa, Kentucky, to Edgar and Anna E. White Hammond. On Oct. 9, 1943, she married John C. Matthews Sr., who preceded her in death in 2007.

She lived in Sikeston most of her life, where she was a member of First United Methodist Church. She loved children and babysat in her home for many years. She was known for her warm hospitality. She enjoyed participating in activities with a group of lifelong friends known as "Bingo Club."

Loving survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Rita and Harry Philip of Jackson; son, Rodney L. Matthews of Sikeston; brother, Joe Hammond of Lancaster, California; grandson, Matthew D. Wiethop of Cape Girardeau; granddaughter, Martha Ann Stallings of Colorado Springs, Colorado; great-grandchildren, Alex, Catherine and Zachary Stallings of Colorado Springs; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son, John Clay Matthews Jr., and a grandson, John Clay "Jayce" Matthews III; also three brothers and three sisters.

A private family visitation was held Friday at McMikle Funeral Home in Sikeston, followed by a graveside in Memorial Park Cemetery in Sikeston. Jennifer Moxley, associate pastor of First United Methodist Church in Sikeston, officiated.
