William Fred Stone, 80, of Bonne Terre, Mo., formerly of Cape Girardeau, died Thursday, April 5, 2001, at Missouri Baptist Hospital in St. Louis. He had been in ill health for some time.

He was born April 1, 1920, in St. Louis, son of George E. and Rose A. Youngerman Stone.

Mr. Stone graduated from Doniphan High School in Doniphan, Mo., in 1939.

He worked 42 years at Marquette Cement Manufacturing Co., which became Lone Star Industries. He started in 1940 as a laboratory technician and became plant manager in 1965. In 1970 he assumed the position of manager of quality, which he held until his retirement.

Mr. Stone was drafted into the U.S. Army in October 1941. He was discharged from active duty in 1946 and joined the National Guard and Army Reserve. He retired from the military in 1966 as a lieutenant colonel.

His current and former affiliations include: Cape Girardeau Chamber of Commerce, Cape Rotary Club, Harold O. Grauel Masonic Lodge 672, Scottish Rite, Moolah Shrine Temple, Eastern Star Chapter 167, Shrine Clown Unit, Legion of Honor, Cape Shrine Club, American Legion, Reserve Officers Association, Cape Girardeau Country Club, IOOF Lodge 5 in St. Louis, Southeast Missouri Hospital Association, and Salem Methodist Church in Ballwin, Mo.

Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, William F. and Janice Stone Jr. of Josephville, Mo.; a daughter and son-in-law, Barbara Ann and Russell Doughty of Bonne Terre; a sister, Helene O'Daniels of Pikesville, Tenn.; three grandchildren, Rusty Doughty of Bonne Terre, Tom Stone of Josephville, Elizabeth Doughty Rockefeller of Springfield, Mo.; and a great-grandson, Grant William Rockefeller of Springfield.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, and four sisters.

Friends may call at Ford and Sons Mt. Auburn Chapel from 4-8 p.m. Sunday. Masonic service will be conducted at 7:30 by H.O. Grauel Lodge 672.

Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the chapel, with the Rev. John Hoos officiating. Burial will be at 1:45 p.m. Monday in Jefferson Barracks Cemetery in St. Louis with military rites by Missouri Honor Guard.

Pallbearers will be Rusty Doughty, Tom Stone, Walter John Heimbaugh, Don Swindle, Greg Rockefeller and Larry Corder.
