JACKSON, Mo. -- Leroy Humes, 82, of Jackson passed away Thursday, July 5, 2001, at St. Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau.

Friends may call from 4-8 p.m. today at McCombs Funeral Home in Jackson.

Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home. The Rev. John Rhodes will officiate. Burial will be in New Bethel Cemetery.

Mr. Humes was born April 17, 1919, at Oriole, Mo., son of Loren and Addie McCormick Humes. He and Helen Clingingsmith were married July 22, 1943.

Loving survivors include his wife; two sons and daughters-in-law, Larry and Audrey Humes and Charles and Lucille Humes, all of Jackson; a daughter and son-in-law, Marty and Kevin Manes of St. Charles, Mo.; seven grandchildren, Cherrie Harris, Tim Humes, Tisha Hecht, Cara Griffith, Kristin Ratcliff, Elizabeth Manes, Kent Manes; and seven great-grandchildren.

Three brothers and two sisters preceded him in death.

Mr. Humes owned and operated a Sinclair Service Station on West Main Street in Jackson. He also worked at the former Seabaugh Ford Implement dealership in Jackson, and as a mechanic at R.B. Potashnick Construction many years. He was a mechanic 15 years at Harris Truck and Trailer, retiring in 1984.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving as a light mortar crewman. He was a survivor of the D-Day invasion of Utah Beach. He was awarded five Bronze Stars for service in Normandy, Rhineland, Ardennes, Central Europe, and Northern France; a Good Conduct Medal; and a Purple Heart with oak leaf cluster.

Mr. Humes was a lifetime member of VFW in Jackson, 50-year member of American Legion in Jackson, and member of Machinists Union Local 37. He attended New Bethel Baptist Church east of Pocahontas, Mo.

Expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to New Bethel Building Fund.
