BERNIE, Mo. -- John William Hartwell Sr., 90, of Campbell, Mo., died Thursday, Aug. 30, 2001, at the VA Medical Center in Memphis, Tenn. BERNIE, Mo. -- John William Hartwell Sr., 90, of Campbell, Mo., died Thursday, Aug. 30, 2001, at the VA Medical Center in Memphis, Tenn.

Born July 31, 1911, in Hayti, Mo., he was the son of James Alexander and Sarah Wigington Hartwell.

On July 24, 1951, he was married to Gladys C. Crutchfield in Piggott, Ark. She died Jan. 23, 1990.

Hartwell was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Army. He also served as a campus policeman at St. Louis University.

He was a member of the Four Mile Masonic Lodge and attended the Beechwell General Baptist Church of rural Campbell.

He is survived by three sons, John William Hartwell II of Florissant, Mo., James Douglas Hartwell of Ferguson, Mo., and Robert Manley Hartwell of Spanish Lake, Mo.; a brother, George Hudson Hartwell of Thayer, Mo.; 10 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, four brothers and five sisters.

Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the Rainey Funeral Home in Bernie.

Funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in the funeral chapel, with the Rev. John Schlager of Campbell officiating. Interment will follow in the Bernie Cemetery.
