Born in Oran, he was the son of Thomas and Nell Davenport Smiddy.

The owner of Mid-South Carpet Co. in Memphis, Smiddy was married to Sarah Sharp, who survives.
He is buried in Memory Hill Gardens in Memphis. Arrangements were under the direction of Canale Funeral Directors in Memphis.
