John M. Underwood, 90, of Chateau Girardeau died Friday, April 23, 1999, at Mission Hospital in Mission Viejo, Calif.

Underwood was born Jan. 1, 1909, at Stoddard County, son of Silas Clinton and Carrie Bridges Underwood. He married Frances Gillespie on Oct. 24, 1929. Underwood was a member of the First Christian Church Disciples of Christ in Cape Girardeau.

He is survived by two daughters, Nelda Simpson of Mount Carmel, Ill., Alice Cofman of Leominster, Mass.; five sons, John M. Underwood Jr. of Jefferson City, James Underwood of Columbia, Dennis Underwood of Cape Girardeau, Doyle Underwood of Chesterfield, Brian Underwood of St. Louis; 13 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Underwood was preceded in death by his wife, two brothers and a sister.

Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Chiles-Cooper Funeral Home in Bloomfield.

Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Philip Curran officiating. Burial will follow in the Bloomfield Cemetery.
