Eldred Sloan McLard, 77, of Cape Girardeau died Thursday, Oct. 14, 1999, at Heartland Care and Rehab Center.

He was born Dec. 24, 1921, at New Bethal, son of Ray and Minnie Penrod McClard. He and Madrea L. Dow were married Dec. 27, 1944, at Blytheville, Ark.

McLard was retired as water superintendent from Platte City Water, where he worked for eight years. He also was water plant operator for the City of Cape Girardeau. He was a machinist in the U.S. Navy in World War II. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and Disabled American Veterans.

Survivors include his wife; one son, Thomas H. McLard of Cape Girardeau; three daughters, LaDonna S. Davis and Catherine J. Peak, both of Cape Girardeau, and Mary A. Harper of Gravel Hill; one brother, the Rev. Arlee McClard of Cape Girardeau; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by five brothers, two sisters and one grandchild.

Graveside service was Saturday at Goschen Cemetery at Oak Ridge. The Rev. Glynn Robison officiated. Lorberg Memorial Funeral Chapel was in charge of arrangements.
