CANALOU -- John Hickman, 73, of Route 1, Canalou, died Friday, March 6, 1998, at his home.
He was born Oct. 1, 1924, in Philadelphia, Miss., son of Enochs and Melinda Bell Hickman.
He married Margaret Lewis on July 4, 1947, at Philadelphia. She died May 23, 1992.
He was an Army veteran of World War II and served in the Philippine Islands and New Guinea and was wounded at the battle of Luzon. He was awarded the Purple Heart, American Service Medal and Philippine Liberation ribbon. He was a member of the Mississippi band of Choctaw Indians and a farm laborer.
He is survived by four sons, Roy and Frank Hickman, both of Canalou, and Bill and James Hickman, both of Philadelphia; two daughters, JoAnn Holder of Sikeston and Joyce Hickman of Memphis, Tenn.; 20 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two sons, a daughter, a grandson and two brothers.
Friends may call after 11:30 a.m. Monday at Nunnelee Funeral Chapel in Sikeston. Graveside service will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Essex Cemetery, with the Rev. Manny Alvarado of Sikeston officiating. Full rites will be performed by Company C of the 1140th Missouri National Guard.
