MOUND CITY, Ill. -- The Rev. John R. Hinman Sr., 77, of Mound City died Wednesday, April 8, 1998, at St. Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau.

He was born March 21, 1921, son of Charles and Sylvia Bussey Hinman.

He was a letter carrier with the Mound City Post Office for more than 30 years and a veteran of World War II. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Mound City, the Mounds VFW Lodge, the Caledonia Masonic Lodge at Pulaski, the White Shrine of Jerusalem, K.I.M. Shrine Club, Ainad Shrine Temple, the Order of the Eastern Star and the Supreme Council Order of Amaranth in Paducah, Ky.

He is survived by his wife, Bertha, of Mound City; two daughters, Katherine Wilburn of Barlow, Ky., and Barbara Jo Stone of Chicago Heights, Ill.; five sons, John R. Hinman Jr. of Springfield, Mo., Carl A. Hinman of Oklahoma City, Okla., Clyde L. Hinman of Mound City, Roy C. Hinman of Villa Ridge and James T. "Tommie" Hinman of Cairo; a brother, Hubert Hinman of Pueblo, Colo.; 21 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a child and a grandchild.

Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Barkett Funeral Home in Mound City and Monday from 9 to 11 a.m. at the First Baptist Church in Mound City. Masonic rites will be at 8 p.m Sunday at the funeral home. Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Monday at the church, with the Rev. Anthony Underwood officiating. Burial will be at the National Cemetery in Mound City, with military rites performed by the Mounds VFW.
