ALTO PASS, Ill. -- George W. Vandergraph, 83, of Alto Pass died Tuesday, April 14, 1998, at St. Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau, Mo.

He was born March 25, 1915, in Greenfield, Mo., son of Charles and Millie Vandergraph. He and Marie Sanders were married July 20, 1935, in Jonesboro.

Vandergraph was a member of Operating Engineers Local 318, Congregational Church, Jonesboro Masonic Lodge 111, VFW and American Legion. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, Carl and Bill Vandergraph of Alto Pass; five daughters, JoAnne Hickam of Alto Pass, Pat Clutts of Cobden, Georgia Hagler of Carterville, Joyce Clayton of Bloomfield, Mo., Paula Shoemaker of Cobden; a brother, Dana Maerz of Highland; 25 grandchildren; and 41 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a granddaughter and a great-grandson.

Friends may call at Crain Funeral Home in Anna from 5-8 p.m. today, and Friday from 8:30 a.m.-noon, and then at Congregational Church after 2 p.m. A Masonic service will be held at 7 tonight.

Funeral will be at 3 p.m. Friday at the church, with the Rev. Gilbert Gee officiating. Burial will be in Alto Pass Cemetery, with military rites by Carroll P. Foster VFW Post 3455.
