Carolyn Bryant Holmberg, a native of Cape Girardeau and resident of Boulder, Colo., died Thursday, Sept. 17, 1998, at Boulder Community Hospital. She was 54.

She was born April 8, 1944, in Cape Girardeau, daughter of Horace and Lucille Kirchhoff Bryant. She married Norman Holmberg on Aug. 24, 1973, in Crockett, Texas.

She had been the director of the Boulder County Parks and Open Space Department since 1983. She is credited with preserving more than 40,000 acres of open space during her tenure.

She was a member of many open space and land-use task forces during the 1980s. She also served on the YWCA board of directors, the City of Boulder Growth Management Task Force, the Boulder County Budget Advisory Committee, and the Boulder County Parks and Open Space Advisory Committee.

She was active in the Boulder County Democratic Party and received its Harry S. Truman Award in 1998. She also was president of the League of Women Voters of the Boulder Valley from 1977 to 1979.

She had been a resident of Boulder for 23 years, moving from Morristown, Tenn.

She is survived by her husband; a daughter, Elizabeth Holmberg of Boulder; and a brother, Gary P. Bryant of Cape Girardeau.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Crist Mortuary in Boulder. Funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Chautauqua Auditorium in Boulder.

Burial will be at Green Mountain Cemetery.
