Graveside service for Paul Sylvester Messmer of Cape Girardeau will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday in Fairmount Cemetery, with Capt. Robert Gauthier officiating. Military rites will be conducted by VFW Post 3838.
Ford and Sons Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Messmer, 78, died Wednesday, July 30, 1997, at Southeast Missouri Hospital.
He was born Jan. 20, 1919, at Kelso, son of Robert John and Paula Leona Seyer Messmer.
Messmer was a lumber grader at H.C. Tooke Log and Lumber Co., and Leming Lumber Co. 47 years. He had been a volunteer at Salvation Army and Cape Senior Center, and served as president of the senior citizens group at Salvation Army. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
Survivors include a son, Lloyd Voerg; a stepson, Danny Gribble; three sisters, Evelyn Koester, Alma Halter and Loretta Halter; and a friend, Clara Thurston, all of Cape Girardeau.
He was preceded in death by a brother.
