Cynthia Sue Halter, 47, of Cape Girardeau died Friday, Aug. 15, 1997, at St. Francis Medical Center.

She was born July 21, 1950, in Cape Girardeau, daughter of George Edward and Wilma Faye Reid McLaird.

She married Thomas Halter Sr. on April 22, 1988, at Las Vegas. He survives.

She was a secretary at St. Mary's School. Prior to that she was secretary at Hanover Lutheran Church. She also served at assistance manager at the SEMO Book Store. She was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary at VFW Post 3838. She was a member of St. Mary's Cathedral.

She is survived by her parents, of Cape Girardeau; a son, Jeff Essner, of Cape Girardeau; a stepson, Thomas J. Halter Jr. of Cape Girardeau; two daughters, Heather Denson of O'Fallon, Mo., and Amy Essner of Cape Girardeau; three stepdaughters, Carlin Welker, Kristy Halter and Tamara Halter, all of Cape Girardeau; a brother, Larry McLaird of Cape Girardeau; a sister, Tracee Shepard of Jackson; and five grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a brother.

Friends may call from 4:30 to 8 p.m. today at Ford & Sons Mount Auburn Funeral Home. Parish prayers will be conducted at 7.

The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Mary's Cathedral Church, with Msgr. Richard Rowling officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery at Cape Girardeau.
