SHAWIE E. NOFFEL

PORTAGEVILLE -- Shawie E. Noffel, 86, of Portageville died Tuesday, Jan. 16, 1996, at St. Francis Medical Center.

He was born Oct. 18, 1909, in Fulton, Ky., to John and Kafa Khourie Noffel. He married Lorene Hamra on Aug. 16, 1931, at Caruthersville.

He operated Noffel's Big Star grocery store in Portageville from 1946 until his retirement in 1976. He opened Sandy's Hallmark that same year.

He was active in many groups, including the Methodist Men Club, the Portageville Rotary Club and the Wesleyans. He was a member of First United Methodist Church in Portageville.

Survivors are his wife; a son, Dr. S. Edwin Noffel of Cape Girardeau; a daughter, Sondra Noffel Biggs of Memphis, Tenn.; two sisters, Lucille Naifeh of Warren, Mich., and Aline Hamra of Fulton; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Visitation is after 4 p.m. today at DeLisle Funeral Home in Portageville. Services will be Friday at 1 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Ed Rhodes officiating. Burial will follow in Portageville Cemetery.
