JACKSON -- Herbert F. Wickham, 88, died Saturday, March 9, 1996, at the Deal Nursing Home in Jackson.

He was born March 24, 1907, in Cape Girardeau, the son of Herbert and Kate Pair Wickham. He married Julia Muriel Hagan in 1930. She preceded him in death.

Wickham graduated from Central High School and attended Southeast Missouri State Teachers College in Cape Girardeau, where he was a quarterback on the football team that inaugurated Houck Stadium. He was a former chief of police in Cape Girardeau and a lieutenant in Troop E of the Missouri State Highway Patrol, retiring from Troop D in Springfield after 30 years of service.

He was in the Missouri Army National Guard for 41 years, retiring as a colonel and battle group commander. He served with the 70th Infantry Division in France and Germany during World War II and was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Survivors are a son, Herbert Wickham III of Jackson; two grandchildren, Bradford S. Wickham of Festus and Victoria L. Karlin of Topeka, Kan.; and six great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, five stepbrothers and four stepsisters.

Friends may call from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday at Ford & Sons Mount Auburn Chapel in Cape Girardeau.

The funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the chapel, with the Rev. Scott Lohse officiating. Burial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery in Cape Girardeau. The Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3838 in Cape Girardeau will conduct a graveside service.
