SIKESTON -- Hettie Mae Barnes, 100, of Essex, died Tuesday, May 28, 1996, at Missouri Delta Medical Center. She was born Nov. 28, 1895, in Formosa, Ark., daughter of Walter and Eva Jane Kirkpatrick Bell. She and Claude Howell Barnes were married March 2, 1916, in Formosa. He died Oct. 31, 1972...

SIKESTON -- Hettie Mae Barnes, 100, of Essex, died Tuesday, May 28, 1996, at Missouri Delta Medical Center.

She was born Nov. 28, 1895, in Formosa, Ark., daughter of Walter and Eva Jane Kirkpatrick Bell. She and Claude Howell Barnes were married March 2, 1916, in Formosa. He died Oct. 31, 1972.

Barnes moved to the Essex area in 1940 from Craighead County, Ark. She was a member of Clines Island General Baptist Church.

Survivors include three sons, Claude Barnes Jr. of St. Charles, Bobby Barnes of Hayti, Bernard Barnes of Anaheim, Calif.; three daughters, Jimmie Smith of Sikeston, Glenna Dunkerson of Cherokee Village, Ark., Jane Henry of Blytheville, Ark.; two brothers, Carroll Bell of Norfolk, Va., J.W. Bell of Osceola, Ark.; a sister, Bessie Watson of Bay, Ark.; 23 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; 23 great-great-grandchildren, and a great-great-great-grandson.

She was preceded in death by two sons.

Friends may call at Watkins and Sons Funeral Home in Dexter from 5-8 p.m. today.

Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home, with the Rev. W.H. Worth officiating. Burial will be in Gravel Hill Cemetery near Bloomfield.
