SIKESTON -- James W. Umfress, 71, of Sikeston died Tuesday, July 9, at the Missouri Delta Medical Center in Sikeston. He was born Feb. 15, 1925, in Fulton, Miss., to Trannie and Frances Dodd Umfress. He was a World War II veteran and served in the Navy. He was a warehouse manager for Schwann's Frozen Food Distributing Co. until he retired. He had previously worked for Oakes Standard Service Station and had managed the South Side Oil Co. in Sikeston...

SIKESTON -- James W. Umfress, 71, of Sikeston died Tuesday, July 9, at the Missouri Delta Medical Center in Sikeston.

He was born Feb. 15, 1925, in Fulton, Miss., to Trannie and Frances Dodd Umfress.

He was a World War II veteran and served in the Navy. He was a warehouse manager for Schwann's Frozen Food Distributing Co. until he retired. He had previously worked for Oakes Standard Service Station and had managed the South Side Oil Co. in Sikeston.

He married Peggy Y. Newton June 26, 1971, in Sikeston. She survives.

Other survivors are his mother, Frances D. Umfress of Amory, Miss.; two sons, Jim Umfress of Sikeston and Ricky Umfress of Berrien Springs, Mich.; three daughters, Donna and Diana Lehman, both of Berrien Springs, and Tammy Miller of Sikeston; two stepsons, Chuck and Ronnie Hannah, both of Sikeston; one brother, Howard Umfress of Amory; six sisters, Clara Perry of Fulton, Miss., Ellouise Shell of Sikeston, Margaret Guillen of Westminster, Calif., Marie Umfress of Los Angeles, Virginia Rowland of North Hills, Calif., and Nellie Jacob, of Los Angeles; and eight grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one sister.

Friends may call from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at Nunnelee Funeral Chapel in Sikeston.

Service will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at the funeral chapel with the Rev. Larry Davis, pastor of the Trinity Gospel Church in Sikeston, officiating. Burial will be in Garden of Memories Cemetery in Sikeston.
