Lula Fuson Stapel, 90, 3120 Independence, died Wednesday, Feb. 15, 1995, at Chateau Girardeau Health Care Center. She was born Dec. 12, 1904, in Woodward, Okla., daughter of William and Margaret Huffman Moody. She first married Albert Fuson Oct. 16, 1926, in North Kansas City. He died in 1953. She later married John C. Stapel July 28, 1962, in St. Louis. He died in 1983...

Lula Fuson Stapel, 90, 3120 Independence, died Wednesday, Feb. 15, 1995, at Chateau Girardeau Health Care Center.

She was born Dec. 12, 1904, in Woodward, Okla., daughter of William and Margaret Huffman Moody. She first married Albert Fuson Oct. 16, 1926, in North Kansas City. He died in 1953. She later married John C. Stapel July 28, 1962, in St. Louis. He died in 1983.

Stapel moved to Columbia in 1962 from North Kansas City, and then to Cape Girardeau in 1983.

She organized the first kindergarten and school cafeteria in North Kansas City, and was leader of the first Girl Scout troop in 1929. The mayor of Kansas City appointed her as a member of the Women's City Commission for International Relations and Trade. She traveled extensively representing the city in foreign countries.

Stapel also served on the boards of the Woman's City Club, Citizens Committee, Girl Scout Council, YWCA, and First Christian Church in Kansas City.

She was a charter member of Westport Chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution in Kansas City and served as treasurer, vice regent and regent. She was regent of the Missouri State Society from 1966-68, and was vice president general of the National Society DAR from 1969-72. She served on the national board five years.

Stapel was an associate member of the Columbian Chapter, State Historial Society and Boone County Historical Society.

Survivors include a daughter, Patricia Strom of Cape Girardeau; four grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a son, daughter, brother and sister.

Burial will be this Saturday at 11 a.m. in Mt. Moriah Cemetery in Kansas City.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Ford and Sons Mt. Auburn Chapel, with the Rev. Miles White officiating.

Friends may call at the chapel from 9-10 a.m. Tuesday.
