JACKSON -- Funeral service for George Martin Wessell of Jackson will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Zion Lutheran Church in Gordonville. The Rev. Karl Leeman will officiate, with burial in the church cemetery.

Friends may call at Cracraft-Miller Funeral Home from 3-8 p.m. today.

Wessell, 77, died Wednesday, Dec. 13, 1995, at Bethesda General Hospital in St. Louis.

He was born June 6, 1918, in Dutchtown, son of Henry Wilhelm Albert and Lillie Muster Wessell. He and Norma Jean Stroder were married Aug. 5, 1950, in Gordonville.

Wessell was a farmer and carpenter all his life. He played semi-professional baseball for Union City, Tenn., and Fulton, Ky.

He was a graduate of the former College High School in Cape Girardeau, and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was a member of Zion Church and Southeast Missouri Amateur Baseball Hall of Fame.

Survivors include his wife; a son, Daniel Wessell of Jackson; a daughter, Paula Hope of Jackson; two brothers, Albert Wessell of Gordonville, Clarence Wessell of Chaffee; two sisters, Ida Sander and Louise Nussbaum of Cape Girardeau, and six grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by five sisters.
