GARNER CATES

SIKESTON -- Garner Cates, 72, of Rock Island, Ill., died Saturday, July 9, 1994, at St. John's Hospital in Springfield, Mo. He was formerly of Sikeston.

He was born June 6, 1922, in Formosa, Ark., son of William and Lucy Cates. He and Lorene Dodd were married Jan. 9, 1948. She died Feb. 2, 1981. He and Lela McGoldrick were married Oct. 8, 1982.

Cates retired from Alcoa Aluminum in Bettendorf, Iowa, in December 1982. He was a member of the Church of Christ in Moline, Ill.

Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Vickie Raymer of Cincinnati, Ohio; a stepson, Leroy McGoldrick of Dallas, Texas; two stepdaughters, Shirley Wehr of Milan, Ill., Vickie Cullis of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; two brothers, Chestle Cates of Little Rock, Ark., Marlin Cates of Clinton, Ark.; two sisters, Ova Baugh of Rock Island, Stella Ruffin of LaGrange, Ky.; two grandchildren, and six stepgrandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a sister.

Friends may call at Ponder Funeral Home from 5-9 p.m. today.

Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Garden of Memories Cemetery.
