CHARLESTON -- Lewis Monroe Evans III, 80, of Charleston, died Sunday, Jan. 9, 1994, at the Missouri Delta Medical Center in Sikeston.

He was born July 10, 1913, at Binghampton, N.Y., son of David Monroe and Grace Axtell Evans. His parents served as missionaries in West Africa.

He married Ethel Slack, Aug. 9, 1941.

Evans graduated from the Cooper Union Institute of Technology in New York in 1936, with a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering. He worked as a professional field engineer in New York, New Jersey and Missouri.

He was a veteran of World War II, having served as Second Lieutenant with the Signal Corps in the U.S. Army and taught engineering at the Officer's Candidate School at Fort Monmouth, N.J.

In 1974, Evans returned to Mississippi County where he worked as a farmer. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Charleston, was a past president and member of the Charleston Kiwanis Club, was a past president and member of the Mississippi County Historical Society, served on the board of the Mississippi County Port Authority and was a member of the Southern Foundation in Cairo, Ill.

In March 1993, he published his self-written memoirs entitled, "Carmathen."

Survivors include his wife; a son, David Monroe "Travis" Evans III of Charleston; a daughter, Susan Jensen of Houston, Texas; and a grandson.

Friends may call after 5 p.m. today at the McMikle Funeral Home in Charleston.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the McMikle Funeral Home in Charleston, with the Rev. Gerald Collier officiating.

Burial will follow in I.O.O.F. Cemetery.
