MOUNDS, Ill. -- Rachel A. Dexter, 96, of Cairo, Ill., formerly of Mounds, Ill., died Sunday, Jan. 23, 1994, at Southeast Missouri Hospital.

She was born June 14, 1897, daughter of Alvah D. and Rachel Branum Sammons.

She was married to Luther Dexter. He died in 1968.

Dexter was a licensed practical nurse.

She was a member of the Washington Avenue Baptist Church.

Survivors include a son, William Silas Hicks of Cairo; two daughters, Lucille Bailey of Winter Haven, Fla., Beatrice Hendricks of Mounds; a brother, Grove Sammons of Ft. Myers, Fla.; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Friends may call after 5 p.m. Tuesday at the Barkett Funeral Home in Cairo.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Barkett Funeral Home in Cairo, with the Rev. David Hyde officiating.

Burial will follow in the Mound City National Cemetery.
