JACK SLAUGHTER

Civic leader and retired insurance agent Roy Oscar "Jack" Slaughter, 74, of Cape Girardeau, died Wednesday, June 23, 1993, at St. Francis Medical Center.

He was born Feb. 24, 1919, at Burfordville, son of Fred and Emma Eakins Slaughter. He and Esther Willa were married June 5, 1942, in Cape Girardeau.

Slaughter was employed by Prudential Insurance Co. 32 years, retiring in 1979. He was currently president and chief executive officer of Cape County Transit Corp.

He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church, American Legion Post 63, Elks Lodge 639, and lifetime member of VFW Post 3838.

Slaughter was chairman of American Legion Boys State 43 years. He has served as noble grand of Odd Fellows, president of Grace United Methodist Men, president of Life Underwriters Association, commander of American Legion Post 63, district commander of District 14 of American Legion, exalted ruler of Elks Lodge, district deputy of Elks Grand Lodge, and president of Cape Senior Citizens Board.

He was past president of the Nutrition Center, and started the building fund. He was also instrumental in helping bring the Missouri Veterans Home to Cape Girardeau.

Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Pamela Lohman of Fruitland, Melenie VanDeWeghe of Cape Girardeau; four grandchildren, and a great-grandson.

Funeral service will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Ford and Sons Mt. Auburn Chapel. The Revs. John Ferguson and Ernest Swartz will officiate, with burial in Lorimier Cemetery. Graveside rites will be by American Legion and VFW.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 4-8 p.m. Friday. An Elks service will be held at 7:30.
