CHARLESTON -- Elmer G. Smith, 64, of Charleston, died Tuesday, Jan. 28, 1992, at his business in Cairo, Ill. He was born April 2, 1927, at Neelyville, son of Wilson David and Maude Marie Lusk Smith. CHARLESTON -- Elmer G. Smith, 64, of Charleston, died Tuesday, Jan. 28, 1992, at his business in Cairo, Ill.

He was born April 2, 1927, at Neelyville, son of Wilson David and Maude Marie Lusk Smith. He and the Fern Eaton were married July 12, 1947.

Smith moved here in 1964 from St. Louis and opened Fashion Cleaners. He opened Drive-In Cleaners in Cairo in 1966.

He was a member of First Baptist Church here, member and past exalted ruler of Cairo Elks, member of Cairo Rotary Club, Propellor Club, and Cairo Chamber of Commerce. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, Tom Smith of Kagle Canyon, Calif., Jerry Smith of Lagos, Nigeria; three daughters, Debra Quertermous of Charleston, Vicki Smith of East Prairie, Janet Smith of Dallas, Texas; his mother, Maude Huhn of Poplar Bluff; a half brother, Gerald Smith of Salem, Ore.; two half sisters, Jane Hall of Poplar Bluff, Esther Witcher of Pacific, and four grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by five half brothers.

Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church. The Rev. Gerald Collier will officiate, with burial in IOOF Cemetery.

Friends may call at McMikle Funeral Home after 5 p.m. Friday.
