JACKSON'S PROBLEM: AFTER THE SNOW, REMOVE THE CINDERS

JACKSON, Mo. -- The city has done a good job of snow and ice removal, City Administrator Steve Wilson said Monday, but he cautioned that the forecast for warmer temperatures presents another problem.

"The next dilemma is, when are we going to get the cinders off the street?" Wilson said.

In the coming days, Public Works Director Jim Roach said, city crews will make sure inlets are clear to make sure melted water has a place to go.

Wilson made the observation at Monday night's Board of Aldermen meeting in response to Alderman Dave Reiminger's question about whether snow and ice in the future could be bladed away from mailboxes.

Wilson said the city's first priority after a snowstorm is always to clear streets to provide access for emergency vehicles.

"We're not really concerned at that particular time about mail," he said.

Putting down cinders is the next priority, Wilson said.

Once that is taken care of, city crews go back and try to clear driveways and mailboxes "if they can and when they can," Wilson said.

In other business, the city approved agreements with Bank of America, Peoples Bank and Bank of Missouri in investing about $11 million in idle city funds.
