SOUTHEAST UNIVERSITY RELATIONS WINS FIVE AWARDS

Southeast Missouri State University's university relations office won five awards in the 2001 Council for Advancement and Support of Education District Six Awards Competition.

The awards were presented on Jan. 16 in Kansas City, Mo.

The competition attracted 1,060 entries submitted by 89 institutions.

Southeast's office of publications, under the direction of Juan Crites, received two awards. The "Your Freshman Experience" publication received a gold award in the "Communications Periodical" category. The "Brown Bag" lunch poster received a silver award for graphic design in the "Publications on a Budget" category.

The Brown Bag lunch gave Southeast students, faculty and staff the opportunity to eat lunch and talk with university President Ken Dobbins and members of the executive staff.

The news bureau, under the direction of Ann Hayes, received three awards. The university's News and Events Web page won a gold award in the "Excellence in Multimedia, Single Web Page" category.

The page, designed by Southeast junior Paul Dobbins, provides news and information about events and issues at Southeast. The news bureau also received a bronze award in the Web sub-site or Special Section" category for The Rumor Mill, a Web page designed to improve communication between the administration and the university's faculty, staff, students and the public.

The news bureau received a bronze award in the "Excellence in Institutional Relations, Best Solution to an Institutional Communications Challenge" category for the Southeast Newswire. The Southeast Newswire is distributed via e-mail twice weekly to the university faculty and staff. It is an electronic compilation of campus news briefs.

"These awards are particularly gratifying because of their highly competitive nature," said Art Wallhausen, assistant to the president at Southeast. "Entering into this area gives us an opportunity to benchmark our work."
