The Area Wide United Way is offering one-time grants to programs that address transportation, affordable housing, youth substance abuse and assistance to low-income families.

The grants are funded by a percentage of the United Way's 2000 campaign contributions. Grant applications are available by calling the United Way office at 334-9634. Deadline is April 30.

Focusing on community issues allows the United Way to have a greater local impact, said Executive Director Nancy Jernigan. Since many agencies are shifting their allocations to programs that address specific needs "an agency is able to do less with a smaller piece of the pie," she said.

Applications should be based on a measurable outcome or program result. This format will allow the United Way to determine which programs are solving identified problems.
