THE JACKSON DEPOT ON LOUIS HOUCK'S RAILROAD

The picture shows the Cape Girardeau County Shipping Association on Feb. 7, 1922. Adolph Kies, manager of the association, reported that from the 48 wagons coming that day, 338 hogs, 44 head of cattle and 312 sheep were loaded into nine rail cars.

The Jackson Depot of Louis Houck's Railroad can be seen on the left in the picture. It was at 506 E. Washington St. near where the CO-OP Service Center is today.

When the Cape Girardeau-Chester rail service reached Jackson on Nov. 8, 1904, it was given a great welcome by the citizens of Jackson. Mayor Edward D. Hays, attorney T.D. Hines and Louis Houck, builder of the road, spoke. The Jackson Band played, making the day a special one for Jackson.

While anyone could flag the train down for a ride at any place, the following stations were along the way: Ancell, Cape Girardeau, Cape La Cruz, Gravel Switch, McKendree, Jackson, Fruitland, Pocahontas, Oak Ridge, Daisy, Friedheim, Hilderbrand, Biehle, Highland, Perryville, Saline Junction, Lithium, Perryville Junction, West Chester, Car Ferry and Chester, Ill.

A line going west from Saline Junction to Farmington included the following stops: Brewer, Giboney, Minnith, Eads, Coffman, McDaniels, Ste. Williams and Farmington.
