HERITAGE GROUP ADDS YOUTH COMMITTEE

For more than 20 years the Jackson Heritage Association has involved adults interested in historical preservation. Now, the group has decided to add a youth committee.

At this year's association banquet, the group named Justin Gibbs, a junior high school student, as a youth representative. Gibbs came up with the idea to assist the association throughout the year.

"Youth can help the heritage association in many ways," Gibbs said. "Right now I am looking into doing a fund raiser over the summer as our first act of business."

The association's main job is the ongoing preservation of the Oliver House.

Gibbs said youths can help with the association's spring cleaning, yard work and various seasonal activities.

The association, which has taken on the project of making a book of the history of Jackson, will soon ask residents to write short family histories for the book.

"The book is a wonderful way for youth to help," Gibbs said. "Not only does it allow for youth to learn about the history of their family but gives them the opportunity to have their work published."

The book is still in the beginning stages and come fall, students will more than likely be asked to help.

"Our town is fortunate to have such a rich history," Gibbs said. "Now we need young people who want to insure that our town's history is around for future generations."

Youngsters interested in being a part of the new youth committee can call Gibbs for information at 243-8223.

"The youth of today are the future of tomorrow," Gibbs said. "Together we can do a lot to help."
