Registration for the fourth session of swimming lessons at the Jackson city pool starts July 16 and ends July 26. All levels of instruction are available. A guard-smart training class, pre-lifeguard training, will be available from July 16 until July 20 for children 12 to 14.

Water aerobics is an ongoing class available from 7 to 8 p.m. Monday, Tuesday and Thursday. Cost is $2.

Cindy Poole, a grandmother taking her granddaughter to swimming lessons, says the Jackson lifeguards "seem to be doing a good job" with her granddaughter.

Poole's granddaughter, Bethani Riley, 6, got moved up from the beginner's class. The lifeguard teaching swimming lessons recognized Riley needed one-on-one instruction, carried out that task, and then put her back into the group where she is now swimming confidently in the deepest part of the pool.

Poole said, "My son, now 14, took lessons here at her age. Now he swims here all the time."
