JACKSON, Mo. -- Nine streets or other paved areas are scheduled to receive asphalt overlays in the fall as part of Jackson's annual street improvement program.

The city will spend $71,830.70 on the program this year. The Jackson Board of Aldermen awarded the contract for the work Monday night to Apex Paving Co. of Sikeston, Mo.

The projects planned to begin in September or October are:

* Dallas Street from Farmington to Daisy.

* Russell Street from Main Street to Adams Street.

* Missouri Street from Main to Washington Street.

* Russell Street from Mary to Park Street.

* Park Street from High to Missouri Street.

* Washington Street Bridge wedges.

* Patches for Main Street at Lilly, and Union Street at Mary Street.

* Recycling center parking lot.

* New shelter at Brookside Park.

* City fuel facility drive.

Mayor Paul Sander said streets are chosen for overlays on a priority basis and encouraged residents to make the city staff aware of streets needing overlays.

He said repairs will be made on Florence and North Hope streets as well, but concrete will be used instead of asphalt.

The asphalt overlay is not intended to include gravel streets, Sander said.

In other business, the board accepted the petition for voluntary annexation of 19.1 acres of property owned by Southeast Medical Center Inc. A public hearing on the annexation will be held at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 4.

• Accepted the petition for voluntary annexation of 19.1 acres of property owned by the Southeast Medical Center Inc. and setting a public hearing for 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 4.
