Mrs. O has multiple health problems that have left her with few financial resources and even less to help her ailing mother.

Mrs. O. is diabetic. She suffers from arthritis, osteoporosis and emphysema.

She has lived alone in Jackson, Mo., since her husband died 10 years ago. Her son, who lives nearby, takes her to see her mother in a nursing home.

Mrs. O. survives on a $500 monthly income and has no savings. High heating costs worry her this winter.

She would like a gift certificate for groceries because she can't often afford to buy much. She needs fruits and juices that are suitable for her diabetes.

She also would like an electric can opener because she has had trouble opening cans lately since her arthritis is getting worse.

Programs like Christmas for the Elderly, a joint program of the Cape Girardeau County Public Health Center and Southeast Missourian, help provide some of the necessary items older, low-income people need but cannot afford.

Items Mrs. O has requested include extra-large flannel pajamas and a housecoat, dish towels, bath towels and a bathroom rug in pink. She could also use paper goods and toiletry items.

Donations of toothpaste, deodorant, shampoos, soap, toilet paper, tissues and paper towels, stamps or gift certificates at discount stores will help all the people who need assistance throughout the year.

The Southeast Missourian collects gifts for Christmas for the Elderly at its Cape Girardeau and Jackson offices. Monetary donations may be sent to the Christmas for the Elderly c/o Cape Girardeau County Public Health Center, 1121 Linden, Cape Girardeau, Mo. 63701.
