Gov. Mel Carnahan has named Douglas S. McDermott of Desloge to replace Tim Arbeiter as student regent at Southeast Missouri State University.

McDermott, 19, a junior in public relations and mass communication, will serve a two-year term that ends Dec. 31, 2001.

McDermott, is interested in a career in public administration, won't be able to vote but will give the student view on issues before the Board of Regents.

McDermott said being the student regent isn't "a banner-waving position," and he will work with the voting members of the board.

He said he is "not there to protest issues."
