The Area Wide United Way, with the help of several local marketing-media outlets, won five awards in the annual Communications Contest sponsored by United Way of America.

The awards were announced and the media thanked at a media recognition luncheon held Tuesday in the Harrison Room at Southeast Missouri Hospital.

More than 1,400 local United Way organizations submitted more than 1,750 entries in the national contest. Five of the six Area Wide United Way entries won awards.

A brochure targeted at chief executive officers designed by Ellen Haskell with Haskell Graphics won first place in the category of campaign brochures. Another of Haskell's brochures, the 1999 campaign brochure, placed third

Winning first place in the category of radio advertising pro bono was a series of four campaign public service announcements produced by Zimmer Radio Group that featured children from the Civic Center singing "Make Someone Happy."

Placing second in the category of campaign films and videospro bono was the 1999 campaign video produced by KFVS-TV 12 that featured local business leaders, contributors and agency volunteers and clients talking about the importance of giving and ways donations help the community.

Winning third place in the category of television advertising-pro bono production were public service announcements created for the 1999 campaign by KFVS-TV 12.

Members of the Education-Marketing Committee were recognized. They are Jackie Griffith, chairman; Gera LeGrand, Zimmer Radio Group; Maggie Friend, Withers Broadcasting; Ellen Haskell, Haskell Graphics; Kim Mitchell, Mitchell Media; Ann Hayes, Southeast Missouri State University; Lin Jones, Cape Girardeau Convention and Visitors Bureau; Charles and Judy Wiles, Southeast Missouri State University; Joyce Hunter, Westfield Shoppingtown; Pat Miller, Saint Francis Medical Center; Paul Walker, Southeast Missourian.

Media recognized for providing services at no cost to the Area Wide United Way were KFVS-TV 12, Zimmer Radio Group, Southeast Missourian, Cash Book Journal, Withers Broadcasting, KBSI Fox 23, KRCU Public Radio, KUGT Radio, City of Cape Cable Access Channel 5, Danny Farrow with Rose City Net, Scott City Signal, Charter Cable, Westfield Shoppingtown, Cape West Cine, Pat Taylor Construction and Drury Southwest.
