BULLDOGS THWART TIGERS WITH SHOT AT END OF OT

SIKESTON, Mo. -- Tony Jones hit a 3-point basket with one second remaining in overtime as Sikeston posted a thrilling 37-36 victory over Cape Central Friday night.

Jones' basket gave the Bulldogs five points in overtime after they went scoreless in the fourth quarter.

"This one breaks my heart," said Cape Central coach Brett Reutzel, who saw his team fall to 6-15. "We played well."

In the overtime period, Chris Cole broke a 34-34 deadlock with a pair of free throws with 30 seconds left. Sikeston then worked the clock for a final shot.

"They actually didn't know time was running out," said Reutzel, who said Jones launched a "desperation" shot from about 22 feet while falling away.

The Tigers were hurt by free throw shooting despite outscoring Sikeston 12-3 at the line. While Sikeston hit all three of its attempts, Central was just 12 of 21.

"The way we're playing, we have to hit free throws," said Reutzel. "If we don't hit them, we're not going to win ballgames."

T.J. Erlacker led Cape Central with 14 points, including a pair of free throws in the final minute of regulation to send the game into overtime tied at 32-32.

Cape Central led 24-21 at halftime, but was outscored 11-4 in the third quarter as Sikeston took a 32-28 lead. Sikeston then went scoreless in the final period.

New Madrid 71, Jackson 52

NEW MADRID, Mo. -- Dereke Tipler scored 20 points and Byron Minner collected 19 as New Madrid jumped on Jackson early and cruised to victory.

New Madrid led 24-12 at the close of the first quarter, 42-23 at halftime and 66-32 by the start of the fourth quarter.

Nathan Brown led Jackson (9-14) with 15 points and Matt Ferrell had 11.

"They are geared up and ready to make a run," said Jackson coach Mike Kiehne. " They're just more athletic than us. We tried to follow our game plan, but they're just more athletic and it took its toll on us."

Scott City 84, Bloomfield 45

SCOTT CITY, Mo. -- Welcome to Walton's world.

Scott City sophomore D.J. Walton scored 37 points, grabbed 10 rebounds and swiped eight steals as the Rams rolled past Bloomfield without starting center Nick Steimle who was out with a sore knee.

"He had a great game and shot the ball well," said Scott City coach Derek McCord of Walton, who hit four threes.

The Rams, who have won nine straight and improved to 17-5, led 23-9 after the first quarter and 43-25 at halftime.

Ben Sample scored 23 points for Scott City. Craig Jungers scored only two points but dished out 12 assists.

Patrick Conner scored 13 points to lead Bloomfield.

Advance 72, Delta 44

DELTA, Mo. -- Ten Hornets found the scoring column while just four Bobcats managed to score as Advance rolled to victory.

Adam Rainey led the Advance offensive with 21 points, Jared Ritter had 17, including four 3-pointers, and Andrew Jenkins had 10.

Craig Bock paced Delta (7-13) with 15 points, Lance Kinder tallied 13 and Troy Nussbaum netted 10.

Advance led 22-15 after one quarter and 39-24 at halftime.

Oak Ridge 65, Chaffee 50

OAK RIDGE, Mo. -- Oak Ridge came out on fire on Homecoming night, outscoring Chaffee 21-6 in the first quarter, but the teams played even after that.

Beau Morrison led the Bluejays (7-12) with 16 points, followed by Ben Fadler with 12.

Chase Eskew paced Chaffee with 16 points, while Jeremy Lynn added 14.

Oak Ridge led 26-18 at halftime and 45-32 going into the fourth quarter.

St. Vincent 80, Windsor 74

PERRYVILLE, Mo. -- St. Vincent's Tyler Wengert scored 34 points, dished out six assists and was 11-for-11 at the free-throw line as the Indians outlasted Windsor.

St. Vincent was 20 of 24 from the free-throw line in a high-scoring fourth quarter.

Mark Gotto and Ryan Brown each added 13 points and Adam Bockman pitched in with 10 for St. Vincent (13-6, 6-3 Jefferson County Conference).

Jon Guelich led Windsor with 23 points.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

St. Vincent 54, St. Pius 40

FESTUS, Mo. -- The Squaws clamped down defensively, outscoring St. Pius 16-2 in the final eight minutes to claim the win.

Danielle Sutterer scored 17 points and Caitlin Hoeh added 14 for St. Vincent, which improved to 8-11.

St. Pius led 24-22 at halftime.

SWIMMING

Central swimmers won't compete today

ST. PETERS, Mo. -- Cape Central competed in four events at the state swimming meet Friday, but the none of the Tigers will be swimming today after failing to finish in the top 16.

"We're all a little disappointed because we were hoping to swim something tomorrow," Central coach Dayna Powell said. "It just didn't happen."

Jon Lowrance, the only Central swimmer to make the state cut in an individual event, finished the 100 breast stroke in 1:06.60.

The 200 medley relay team of Stratton Tingle, Lowrance, Andrew Moreton and Sam Maguire finished in 1:49.47.

Those four swimmers also comprised Central's 200 freestyle team which finished in 1:36.26 and the 400 freestyle team which finished in 3:38.19.
