CHAFFEE, Mo. -- Chaffee continued its season-long roll with an 11-1 win over Oran as it defended its championship in the Red Devil Classic baseball tournament Saturday night.

Host Chaffee (13-1) wasted no time, putting up eight runs in the first inning. The Red Devils hammered seven hits in the frame as they sent 12 batters to the plate and posted their 13th straight victory after a season-opening defeat.

A leadoff walk to Jeremy Lynn followed by his steal of second base, a single off the bat of Matt Stroup and a wild pitch set Chaffee up with runners on second and third. G. P. Glueck's sharp single sent Lynn and Stroup home to begin the rout.

Travis Hanback and Rusty Duncan ripped RBI doubles, before Oran starter Ryne Wood was lifted after loading the bases. Adam Friga came on in relief and was greeted by Lynn's two-run single and another RBI single by Perry Rice, before getting the final out.

"You can't spot a good ballclub that many runs," said Oran coach Mitch Wood, "and they definitely are a good ballclub."

In the fourth, Adam Friga reached on an infield hit and scored Oran's only run after a wild pitch and a Chaffee throwing error.

Glueck, the Red Devils' starter, was in command throughout. He picked up the complete-game win as he hurled a five-hitter with eight strikeouts. Three of the hits were of the scratch, infield variety.

Chaffee picked up a run in the fifth inning and two in the sixth to gain a 10-run advantage and end the six-inning contest.

While Chaffee coach Brian Horrell was pleased with the win, he felt his team's defense was not up to par.

"You've got to be happy when you win 11-1," said Horrell, "but we didn't look real sharp on the defensive side. We've been swinging the bats well of late, so we're rolling right along, but we've got to make sure we get the defense shored up."

Oran, one of the better 1A teams in the area, fell to 9-2 on the season.

Glueck, Rice and Duncan all had two of Chaffee's nine hits.

Friga had two of Oran's five hits.

* Chaffee routed New Madrid 11-1 in six innings in Saturday's semifinals behind a two-hitter by Zac Horman.

Glueck homered while Rice had three hits.

New Madrid went on to place third by beating Shawnee, (Ill. ) 9-0. Dexter claimed fifth with a 13-1 win over Scott City. Perryville captured ninth by routing Senath 19-2.
