SIKESTON, Mo. -- The Notre Dame High School baseball team lost a key SEMO Conference game Tuesday afternoon, but coach Jeff Graviett found it hard to be too disappointed.

Despite competing without three of their top players who were injured in a Monday automobile accident, the Bulldogs put up quite a challenge against a strong Sikeston squad and actually came away with one victory.

In the completion of a suspended game from early in the season, Sikeston prevailed 8-7 in nine innings. Then, in the regularly-scheduled contest that does not count in the league standings, the Bulldogs prevailed 3-2.

"We're thankful those kids are going to be fine," Graviett said.

The coach was referring to John O'Rourke, Todd Friend and Shane Kistner, who were involved in the wreck prior to Monday's practice. Although they were not seriously injured, all will likely miss a couple of weeks of action.

As for the games Tuesday, Sikeston is now 11-2 overall and 7-0 in SEMO Conference play. Notre Dame, which had a seven-game winning streak snapped, is 10-5 overall and 5-3 in the league.

In the completion of the suspended game, which had ended after seven innings with the score tied 6-6 on March 20 in Cape Girardeau, Sikeston pushed across a run in the top of the eighth before Notre Dame countered with one in the bottom of the frame. But Sikeston went ahead for good with one in the ninth.

Scott Eftink was the losing pitcher while Jamie Puckett got the win.

Then in the regularly-scheduled game, Scott Wittenborn pitched a gem while Kyle Diveley accounted for Notre Dame's entire offense with a three-run home run in the fifth inning.
