MARBLE HILL, Mo. -- Bell City, Woodland and Oran all recorded first-round victories as the Woodland Volleyball Tournament got under way Tuesday night. Bell City, the No. 2 seed, knocked off No. 7 Greenville 15-12, 15-7. Third-seeded Woodland downed No. 6 Chaffee 15-9, 9-15, 15-4. And No. 5 Oran pulled off a minor upset over No. 4 Zalma 15-13, 15-9...

MARBLE HILL, Mo. -- Bell City, Woodland and Oran all recorded first-round victories as the Woodland Volleyball Tournament got under way Tuesday night.

Bell City, the No. 2 seed, knocked off No. 7 Greenville 15-12, 15-7. Third-seeded Woodland downed No. 6 Chaffee 15-9, 9-15, 15-4. And No. 5 Oran pulled off a minor upset over No. 4 Zalma 15-13, 15-9.

For Woodland, Emily Davis posted three kills and three service aces, while Danyel Farrell and Stacie Greer had three assists apiece. Sarah Davenport had three aces.

In Thursday night's semifinals, top-seeded Leopold will take on Oran at 6:30, followed by Bell City and Woodland at 8.

Jackson 15-15

St. Vincent 9-3

JACKSON, Mo. -- Jackson had the three Js going in its first match of the season.

Jenna Leet had four kills and three blocks, Jessie Koeper posted three kills and Jennifer Mesey added three kills and six blocks.

Linden Hahs chipped in with three aces.

"We had our ups and downs," Jackson coach Nancy Ellis said. "We need to work on our defense but we were swinging well and moving well. I was pleased but I also know we have a lot of work to do."

SOFTBALL

Oakville 5, Cape Central 0

Cape Central (2-4) managed only three hits against a solid Oakville team.

Ashley Foutch hit a triple for the Lady Tigers, but it was their only extra-base hit.

"We just didn't hit the ball," Central coach Amy Blattel said. "We've got to be more aggressive at the plate. We're watching too many pitches go by."

Holly Schnurbush suffered the loss. She went the seven-inning distance, giving up four earned runs on eight hits and two walks. She struck out four.

Central's JV lost 12-1.

Perryville 4, Poplar Bluff 3

PERRYVILLE, Mo. -- Perryville, which managed just five hits, picked up its first win of the year thanks to a strong outing by Amanda Roth.

Roth went all seven innings and allowed two earned runs on seven hits, with two strikeouts and one walk.

Amy Steffens of Perryville (1-2) had two hits and drove in two runs.

Delta 4, Twin Rivers 1

DELTA, Mo. -- Delta (2-2) got a strong pitching performance from Rebecca Cook to ease past Twin Rivers.

In seven innings, Cook allowed five hits and no earned runs, with nine strikeouts and three walks.

Delta had just four hits.

GIRLS TENNIS

Poplar Bluff 6, Cape Central 3

POPLAR BLUFF -- Cape Central suffered a loss in its season-opening dual match.

The Lady Tigers got victories from Allison Campbell and Sara Burns in singles while the team of Lauren Sulzer and Allie McGinty prevailed in doubles.

Cape Central's JV recorded a 12-2 victory.

Jackson's JV also posted a shutout, prevailing 7-0.
