JACKSON, Mo. -- Cape Central dominated the second half of play Tuesday against Jackson to pick up a 2-0 victory, the Tigers' first win of the young season.

Cape Central, which battled Carbondale to a 1-1 tie Monday, netted two second-half goals while keeping Jackson from getting off a single shot.

Cape Central improved to 1-0-1 while cross-county rival Jackson dropped to 0-1.

"A win against Jackson is always sweet," said Cape Central coach Tom Doyle.

The defenses dominated in a scoreless first half. Cape Central managed just three shots on goal, while Jackson had four. None of the shots were serious threats.

"I thought we played a really good first half," said Jackson coach Zack Walton. "We did a lot of good things out there."

Then at the 53-minute mark, Cape Central broke through when sophomore Aaron Bornstein banged one into the lower left corner of the goal from about eight yards out. Whit Lynn assisted on the play.

Said Doyle, "I thought that near the end of the first half we were a little disorganized, but we really stepped it up in the second half."

Jon Mark Thompson, Cape Central's all-state forward in 2000, scored his second goal in two games to give the Tigers a little breathing room.

Thompson, who led the Tigers with 19 goals and seven assists last season, beat a defender and sent the ball home from about 20 yards out at the 65-minute mark. He barely missed a second goal when he rifled a direct kick that caught the right post with 12 minutes left.

"Our boys got tired and when you do that, you're going to have breakdowns," said Walton. "We made some mistakes on defense and offense."

If conditioning is an issue for Jackson, the next few days should provide some answers. The Indians play eight games during a nine-day span.

Walton refused to be too disgruntled by the loss.

"Our goal is to build and peak at district time and give ourselves a chance to win that," said Walton.

Central goalie Trevor Blattner registered five saves in the shutout, while Jackson goalie Austin McDowell had eight saves.

In JV action, Cape Central and Jackson finished in a scoreless tie.
