Cape Girardeau Central High's girls basketball team steadily pulled away to post a 59-45 victory over visiting New Madrid County Central Monday night.

The Lady Tigers led 14-11 after one quarter, 29-22 at halftime and 45-33 entering the final period as they improved to 16-3.

Mindy Hoffman continued her recent strong play by leading the Lady Tigers with 17 points. Katie Dougherty added 14.

"We didn't shoot the ball real well, but we played pretty hard and overall we did all right," said Cape Central coach Darrick Smith. "Mindy shot the ball well, as she has been doing."

Cape Central will now prepare for Thursday's home game with rival Jackson. A win for the Lady Tigers would virtually clinch the SEMO Conference title while a Lady Indians' victory would force a three-way tie between Jackson, Cape Central and Poplar Bluff.

"That's always a big one," said Smith. "We're looking forward to it."

"We were challenged this year," said Perryville coach Vickie Lohman. "We were told we wouldn't do it again by a lot of the teams in the conference.

"It's a credit to this year's seniors and juniors. We returned only one starter from last year. To do this this year is something special."

Monday's outcome was never in doubt as Perryville jumped out to a 21-3 lead in the first quarter and led 42-14 by halftime.
