SCOTT CITY'S THUMPING OF ND GIVES RAMS UNDISPUTED RIGHTS TO TOP SEED

The Scott City-Notre Dame game Friday night didn't live up to the hype, but it did distinguish the Rams, who have won 31 of their last 33 games, as the undisputed top seed in the upcoming district tournament.

Right now, it looks as if Notre Dame -- with wins over Sikeston and Cape Central (twice) -- will be the two seed and Woodland, which shocked 4A Jackson on Jackson's home floor this past week, will get the three seed followed closely behind by Kelly.

Greenville, Bloomfield, East Prairie and Chaffee would round out the final four spots.

Dexter remains unbeaten

The Stoddard County Activities Association Tournament will start Monday and, if the seeds play out, could come down to a championship game between two ranked schools.

Dexter, the only undefeated boys team in the region, is the favorite to win the tournament with a 14-0 record and ranked fourth in Class 3A. Advance is the second seed and is ranked fourth in 1A.

Bernie got the three seed, followed by Woodland, Bell City, Puxico, Bloomfield and Richland.

In other tournament action next week, Scott City (14-1) will be heavily favored to win the Scott-Mississippi Conference Tournament. Scott County Central got the two seed, followed by Kelly at No. 3, Oran at No. 4, Delta at No. 5, Oak Ridge at No. 6, East Prairie at No. 7 and Chaffee rounding out the eight-team field.

St. Vincent's fab four

St. Vincent's boys team has the distinction of having four players averaging double figures.

Gabe Hotop leads the way at 14.0 points per game, while Ryan Prost scores 13.9, followed by Todd Meyer and Justin Amschler who score 10.8 and 10.4 points per game, respectively.

Portageville fading fast

Going into the season, Portageville looked like an almost lock to emerge from this region in Class 2A.

The Bulldogs, ranked as high as fifth in the state, however have stumbled of late.

Portageville, which started the season 8-1, lost three in a row before beating South Pemisccot Friday night.

After losing to Dexter in the Bloomfield Tournament, Portageville was upset by Scott Central and Caruthersville.

They also lost starting point guard and tenacious defender Quinton Sykes who was dismissed from the team for disciplinary reasons.

Superman Classic

Sikeston, Charleston and New Madrid will be competing in the Coca-Cola Superman Classic at Massac County High School in Metropolis, Ill. starting Monday.

Eight teams will be competing in all, including perennial powerhouse Paducah Tilghman (9-5), who plays Sikeston (9-5) in the first round on Monday. Also on Monday, New Madrid (9-4) will play Herrin (8-4) and in the first round. Charleston will play DuQuoin, Ill. on Tuesday.
