POPLAR BLUFF -- Cape Central's girls team took first place with 101 points while the boys took third with 57 Friday in the four-team SEMO Conference track and field championships.

Jackson's girls (91) took second, while the boys team (41 1/2) took fourth.

Multiple winners for the Lady Tigers included Dionna Webb (100, 200, long jump), Heather Jenkins (shot put and discus) and Kim Pancoast (800, 1,600).

Pancoast, whose 800 time of 2:25.75 was a personal best, was also part of the 4x800 team which took first.

Central's girls team was also led in part by a freshman, Alex Wieser, who took first place in the 400 (61.74) and was part of two relay teams, the 4x200 and the 4x100 which took third and second, respectively.

"Wieser did everything tonight but drive the bus home," said Central coach Lawrence Brookins.

For Jackson, Jennifer Love had a brilliant day, posting a first place in the 100 hurdles and the 300 hurdles and posting a personal best in the triple jump for a second-place finish.

On the boys side, Mario Whitney took first in the 100 in 11.00 and the 200 in 22.1.

LEOPOLD -- Jason Van de Ven allowed just two hits as Leopold rolled to victory.

Leopold's Scott Vangennip pitched a scoreless seventh inning, facing three batters and striking out two.

Lee Vander Mierden, Ashton James and Garan Engelen each had two base hits and two RBIs to lead the Leopold offense. Josh Van de Ven chipped in with two hits and one RBI.

Leopold (8-5) enters the first round of the Class 1A, District 3 playoffs in Annapolis next week as the top seed.

SCOTT CITY -- Trailing 3-2, Scott City put six runs on the board in the third inning of a make-up game against Woodland.

With the bases loaded and two outs, centerfielder Marcus Klund delivered a big three-run single which broke a 3-3 tie. Klund later stole second and scored on a single by Jacob Ressel.

Scott City starter Bill Posey surrendered a three-run homer to Woodland's Paul Long in the first inning, but followed with two hitless innings of work to get the win.

Lucas Ward relieved Posey to begin the fourth inning and finished the game. Ward allowed four hits, one walk, one earned run, and struck out one.

"We received our district playoff seeds today," said Scott City coach Mike Umfleet. "Woodland is seeded third; we're fifth. We used that as motivation for today's game."

BOYS GOLF

VIBURNUM -- St. Vincent returned to the Missouri Class 1A Golf Championships with a convincing win in the District 1 tournament at Viburnum Country Club.

With the top two teams qualifying, the Indians had a combined team score of 326. Valle of Ste. Genevieve placed second with a total of 339. Other team scores were Whitfield-St. Louis (350), Viburnum (353), Bloomfield (374), Bernie (379), Van Buren (414) and Valley Park-St. Louis (480).

St. Vincent's John Paulus with a 2-over-par 74 was the tournament medalist. Four of his teammates, Craig Schumer (79), Mark Gotto (86), Wes Richardet (87) and Ryan Prost (87) were among the top 10 scorers who advanced to the individual competition at the state meet.

The Indians avenged a runner-up finish to host Viburnum in last year's district tournament. Viburnum finished second in the '99 state meet, while St. Vincent took third place.

The victory continued a fine season by the St. Vincent linksters, who are 14-2 overall (12-1 conference).

GIRLS SOCCER

Perryville 9, Marion 0

MARION, ILL. -- In a rematch of an early season contest, Perryville again won easily over Marion.

The Lady Pirates, having beaten Marion 4-0 in the second game of the season, completed the sweep.

Scoring six goals in the first half and three in the second, Perryville improved to 15-5-3. The Lady Pirates received a hat trick from Brooke Winkler and single goals from Amy Steffens, Jamie Amberger, Stacy Baer, Amanda Schumer, Amanda Nuyt and Kate Bohnert.

Julie Heuring and Schumer recorded two assists, while Jenna Schuessler, Nuyt and Baer had one each.

Despite the lopsided score, Perryville coach Heidi Knaak felt that the Marion squad had been competitive and were depleted by late-season injuries.
