HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL: SCOTT CITY CAPTURES RIVALRY GAME AGAINST CHAFFEE 36-21

SCOTT CITY, Mo. -- The Chaffee Red Devils may have been outmanned in size, strength and depth, but certainly not in heart.

Scott City, the sixth ranked team in the latest Missouri Class 2A poll, kept its record unblemished at 5-0 with a 36-21 win Friday night at Scott City High School. But the Rams knew they were in a battle with their longtime rivals and county neighbors.

"No one gave us a shot coming in and we knew that," said Chaffee coach Allan Horrell. "We tried to feed off emotion and it took the first half to realize that we could play with them. I think you saw a different ballclub in the second half."

Trailing 23-6 at the half, Chaffee outscored Scott City in the second half, pulling within eight points at 29-21 about midway of the third quarter.

The Rams got on the board on their first offensive possession when Brad Glenn blasted in from 6 yards out. On its next possession, Scott City scored again when Glenn went left, cut back to the right sideline and rambled for 33 yards.

Chaffee countered with a 27-yard touchdown toss from Travis Hanback to Perry Rice to narrow the margin to 13-6.

Scott City came right back and scored on a six-play drive capped by Marcus Klund's 35-yard scamper.

A 27-yard field goal by the Rams' Andrew Estes made the score 23-6 at halftime.

"We were a little bigger and stronger, but we have to work on the killer instinct," said Scott City coach Stephen O'Brien. "When we get up two or three touchdowns, we have to put teams away."

Chaffee, forced to go to a passing game in the second half in an effort to play catch-up, got two touchdowns (52, 10 yards) from the combination of Hanback to Jeremy Lynn.

Hanback completed 9 of 21 for 171 yards and three scores.

The Rams running game, led by another fine performance from Klund with 257 yards on 26 carrries and two touchdowns, was awesome once again. Klund's running mate Glenn also ran well with 105 yards on 14 carries and three touchdowns.

G. P. Glueck, Chaffee workhorse, ran for 92 tough yards on 21 carries.
