Tommy Wencewicz
School: Notre Dame
Sport: Baseball
Coach: Chris Neff
Week Report: Wencewicz and the Bulldogs opened the season with wins over three Class 4A teams, Sikeston, Poplar Bluff and Jackson last week. Wencewicz, the junior leadoff-hitting centerfielder for the Class 2A Bulldogs, scattered six hits in those three games. His best game was against Poplar Bluff when he went 3-for-4 with a triple, a run batted in, two runs scored and a stolen base. So far, he's 6-for-11 (.545) and his on-base percentage is even more impressive. In 13 plate appearances, Wencewicz has been on base 10 times (.769).
Coach's comments: "This is the first year he hasn't played basketball and it usually takes him a while to get going. This year he's been in the cages all offseason and he's really hitting the ball around. He likes the leadoff role. The team expects him to get on base. He's been consistent. He's a really good athlete. He can get to balls most people couldn't and now his confidence is growing. There's no doubt he'll be a very good player over the next couple years."
