KOLWYCK HITS TWO MORE IN KELLY WIN

BENTON -- To say that Bradley Kolwyck has been in a zone would not even be doing the Kelly High junior justice.

Kolwyck blasted two home runs in his first two trips to the plate Wednesday -- giving him homers in five consecutive at-bats -- as the Hawks won a 15-10 slugfest over visiting St. Vincent.

During Tuesday's game against Portageville, Kolwyck belted three homers. He now has an area-leading eight on the season.

"He's really in a zone," said Kelly coach Mike Scott. "It seems like everything he's hitting is really hard."

Kolwyck had three of Kelly's 13 hits and drove in four runs -- his homers were both two-run shots -- as Kelly improved its record to 9-2.

John Heuring and Vince Elkins both added two hits. Heuring and freshman Adam Daughhepee had three RBIs apiece while Justin Simpher added two RBIs.

Jamie Essner was the winning pitcher as he sparkled in relief with four scoreless inning. Essner allowed just two hits in relief as he took over for starter Tim Schmitt, who allowed eight hits and eight earned runs in three innings.

Derek Kutz paced St. Vincent, which fell to 5-7, with three hits and two RBIs. Josh Meyer added two hits.

Dusty Wengert suffered the loss as he went the distance.

Kelly trailed 10-6 in the third inning before rallying.

"It was a wild game," Scott said. "St. Vincent has a pretty good team. They hit the ball well."

Kelly will have a big game Friday, hosting Chaffee in a contest that holds major Class 2A district implications.

Notre Dame 11, Fredericktown 2

Josh Eftink pushed his season home run total to seven as Notre Dame improved to 11-1 on the year.

Eftink also doubled and pitched two innings of shutout ball in relief.

Mark Ostendorf earned the win, going four innings.

Todd Friend went 2-for-3 with two runs batted in.

"It wasn't a very pretty game," Notre Dame coach Chris Neff said. "Both teams made a lot of errors. We just made fewer mistakes than they did."

Sikeston 15, Cape Central 5

SIKESTON -- Central took a step back with a 15-5 loss in six innings.

The collapse ended a three-game winning streak in which Central had played its best games of the season.

Sikeston put the game away with a nine-run sixth. Only one of the nine runs was earned. Sikeston scored six runs in the third.

In all, the Tigers (7-9, 2-3 SEMO Conference) committed six errors.

"I was very disappointed with our defense today," Central coach Steve Williams said. "We didn't play well at all."

Matt Welker was tagged with the loss. He went 5 1-3 innings, striking out seven, walking one and allowing eight hits.

Mike Sullivan went 3-for-4 with a run batted in for Central. Mark Fisher went 2-for-4 with an RBI and Welker had two hits.

Central's junior varsity team dropped to 7-4 on the season with a 7-4 loss. John Snider suffered the loss despite helping his cause with a two-run homer. Four of Sikeston's run were unearned.

The Tigers will host Poplar Bluff today.

Kelly girls prevail

SCOTT CITY -- Kelly's girls won out over five other teams in the Scott County Conference Meet held here.

In the SEMO South Conference boys meet, also held here, Portageville prevailed among seven teams.

Kelly's girls scored 115 points to hold off East Prairie (100).

Portageville's boys had 129 points to outdistance Kelly (105).

The only double individual winner in the entire meet among area squads was Kelly's Lucas Choate, who captured the boys 1,600 and 3,200 runs.

One of the highlights of the meet was the performance of Chaffee's Andy Obermann, who tossed the shot put an impressive 49 feet one-half inch to prevail.

BOYS GOLF

Cape Central 164, Dexter 171

DEXTER -- Central improved to 7-3 by defeating Dexter.

Danny Groesbeck led the Tigers with a score of 40. Jeff Haycraft and Luke Oliver each shot a 41 while Nick Harter came in at 42.

Dexter's top score was from Kyle Christian (41).

Jackson wins triangular

STE. GENEVIEVE -- Jackson scored a 161, which was seven strokes better than Ste. Genevieve and 11 strokes better than host Valle.

Peyton Sims led Jackson (8-3) with a score of 38 on the par-36 course. Gabe Estes followed with a 40 while Nathan Brown shot a 41 and Brett McDowell scored a 42.
